How to Fix Water Damaged Wood Floor

Thinking how discouraging is water damage, keep in mind that it doesn’t necessarily mean having to replace your damaged wood flooring with a new one. It doesn’t require a natural disaster to damage your wood floor. Even plumbing issues in your house can cause problems with your flooring. No matter what causes it, water damage can trigger mold growth and cause warping and rotting and these can ruin wood and your floor won’t be the same anymore.

How to Fix Water Damaged Wood Floor

As soon as you see damage on your wood flooring you should take action so the repair becomes easier and at a lower cost. Here are a few tips on how to handle when a water damaged wood floor occurs.

Quickly remove the water

You will have a very limited amount of time to clear and remove the water that has penetrated the hardwood floor since wood is a very absorbent material. Try using towels and other things to dry out the water that is on the surface to stop the moisture from going too deep even though probably the water has accessed underlying surfaces.

Dry with equipment

After soaking up what was on the surface, you have to work it up in order to dry it up completely. For this, you need some equipment to do it properly. You have to use dehumidifiers and heaters to absorb the excess moisture from the wood floor and have the best results. After using the dehumidifier and once the moisture from the deepest layers is taken out, turn on the heaters to make sure everything is super dried up.

Clean

The absorbent nature of wood makes it more susceptible to dirt and other organic materials penetrating it while it is soaked and wet and this leads to the possibility of mold growth. This is why once all the moisture is removed, a deep clean is necessary. Clean with dry brushes and disinfectant. Don’t pour water on the floor because you will go back to step 0 again. After cleaning, go with another round of heaters to be sure it’s completely dried off.

Find the source

Knowing where this water is coming from is as important as drying and cleaning the wood floor because it helps prevent further issues. Water damage can come from every corner so be sure to check your pipes, fridge, sinks, and sewer line if they are properly functioning.
